[Not “Liang Shuo”] - Liang Shuo 2005-2008

  Exhibition Period: 17th May, 2008 - 30th June, 2008
Opening Reception: First Part / 17 May, 2008 Saturday 4pm
  Second Part / 13 June, 2008 Saturday 4pm

C5 Art is presenting Liang Shuo’s Solo Exhibition in May, which features his works from 2005 to 2008. Liang Shuo was known for his sculptures of migrant workers. In a society where the moral and cultural ethos emphasized concern for the poor, the disadvantaged, as well as the cities’ migrant population, Liang Shuo gave us his own “grassroots” symbols. From a moral perspective, Liang was impressive. He employed a form of realism more dramatic than academic realism. Though Liang’s study of migrant workers also involved an investigation of the self, to most people, his artistic vision was then directed outward. However, Liang was not trapped in his early success. Changes in his personal life as well as a trip to Holland from January 2005 to December 2006 caused Liang to shift focus from migrant worker sculptures to the exploration of his own heart. Liang took this step with firm determination. He is a man changed by pain, different from those changed by the world. Liang Shuo started to oppose more and more things through his art. He used the simple but flexible project of shopping at a temple fair to oppose the alleged profoundness of art and the trend of prioritizing concept. He made a highly realistic sculpture of his son to challenge the strict opposition between classical techniques and the utilization of new materials and found objects in contemporary art. He poured ink onto gesso in a gesture to oppose the grand meaning of art and the profession of art collection. He repeated the labor of cutting and welding C-steel to oppose overly intellectual activities. These works do not have an overarching style or theme. The artist’s spontaneous, spur-of-the-moment, Pozhi -style (to borrow a Buddhist term) has transcended styles and themes. Demonstrating that artistic behavior can happen at any moment, these works seem to be guided by a broader artistic concept, and suggest the element of “freedom”.
